Department of Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is the application of basic sciences in converting, purifying and increasing the value of various materials during physical and chemical processes. In Chemical Engineering, all the engineering sciences a chemical engineer requires to work with different chemicals are taught so that a graduate can carry out, control and supervise relevant operations in different factories. The aim of the bachelor’s program in Chemical Engineering is to train skilled experts for the management and exploitation of various chemical industries.

The average length of this program is 4 years. The length of each semester is 16 weeks of full education. The total number of units is 140, including 20 general units, 46 basic units, 55 compulsory specialized units and 19 optional specialized units. The project of the bachelor’s program is 3 units and the internship is done in one of the industrial centers for a period of 2 months, equivalent to 320 hours. Among the basic and specialized courses that are taught in this field of study, we can mention mass and energy balance, engineering mathematics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, unit operations, reactor design and process control.

Job Prospects

The variety of jobs in Chemical Engineering is very high and a wide range of industries, companies and factories are managed by chemical engineers. Chemical Engineering graduates can work in the following industries:

  • Chemical industries

  • Oil, gas and petrochemical industries

  • Food industries

  • Biochemical industries

  • Mining and cement industries

  • Paint and resin industries

  •  Polymer industries and polymer products

  • Small and large knowledge-based workshops and factories which produce new products

In various industries, Chemical Engineering graduates will be tasked with the following:

  • Exploiting various industries optimally from a technical and economic point of view

  • Fixing problems and providing solutions for technical issues of a process

  • Adapting quantitative and qualitative conditions of production based on the market

  • Development and transfer of technology in order to improve and increase production

  • Employing and managing technicians

  • Creating creativity in processes in order to compete in production

Message of the Director

Chemical Engineering is one of the first fields established in Kermanshah University of Technology, with 10 full-time faculty members and a high potential in training undergraduate and graduate students. Chemical Engineering department has various educational and research laboratories which have enough space and are equipped with modern equipment. Faculty members of Chemical Engineering department have specializations in membrane separation, process control, catalyst and reactor, biotechnology and nanotechnology. This has led to the success of the members in carrying out diverse and up-to-date research as well as to industrial projects for oil and gas refineries and petrochemical companies.

General Responsibilities

The most important task of Chemical Engineering department is to train distinguished graduates who are efficient and familiar with today’s industries. For this reason, the training of students starts seriously from the very first semester, and in order to improve and raise the academic level of students, exercise solving and remedial classes are usually conducted in the main and specialized courses along with the teaching classes of faculty. For the master’s courses, in addition to conducting classes, research activities of students should also be considered. In this regard, postgraduate students’ familiarity with research begins in the form of class projects from the very first semester and is completed when students do the postgraduate project at the end of the program.

Honors and Achievements

  • Publication of original scientific books as well as articles in international journals

  • Patent registration

  • Obtaining the top rank among the higher education institutes of Kermanshah Province in 2011 and 2012

  • Graduates gaining entry to the master’s programs of the prestigious universities of Iran, such as Sharif University of Technology, Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran University of Science & Technology, Tarbiat Modares University and the University of Tehran

  •  Obtaining top national and international ranks in national competitions in 2010 and 2015

  •  Winning the first place in the National Olympiad of Chemical Engineering in 2013

  • Carrying out extracurricular research projects which are profitable for the University by the faculty members of Chemical Engineering department
